Game rules in «Hachapury»
Each player has 15 checkers of one colour (black or white) and two game dice.
The objective of the game – to move all own checkers into the home board and bear off all of them earlier than the opponent does. Home board of black is on points 1-6, white – on points 13-18 (the view from white side).
The right of the first move is played in the following way: players throw one die and the one who gets more points will be the first to start to move. Two dice are thrown simultaneously during the game.
Initial setting of checkers
In the beginning of game 4 checkers are set on the 24th position – i.e. on the «head» and the rest 11 are set on position 6 – «in the home board».
According to the game rules it is possible to move any quantity of checkers from the head. And this is the difference with a classical backgammon where it is possible to remove only one checker from the head. It is possible to make a move from any position.
During the game the checkers are moved counter-clockwise one after another.
When a player rolls dice then according to the rolled points he is obliged to move his checkers being guided by the following rules:
- If there is an opponent’s checker on the point then it is not possible to put the own checker on this very point;
- It is necessary to move strictly on that number of points which was rolled on the die;
- It is possible to move any quantity of checkers;
- It is impossible to summarise points on two dice – it is necessary to move a checker at first on the number of the points rolled on one die, and then – on the number of points rolled on the second die;
- Any quantity of checkers can be on one point;
- The player is obliged to use all rolled points even in detriment of his own position. If there are two moves: one to use one die and the other - to use two dice the player is obliged to make a move using both dice («Full move rule»);
- If a player doesn't have possible moves he passes the move;
- Building the sequence of checkers the player has no right to create an impassable barrier for the checkers of the opponent if there is no at least one checker of the opponent ahead of this barrier.
Checkers bearing off from the board
At the moment when all checkers are already in the home board the player can start to bear off the checkers from the board.
The checkers bearing off goes on in the following way:
- The player has the right to bear off a checker from the point according to the number of points thrown out on a dice;
- If there are not such checkers on the board then the player is obliged to move checkers from highest points;
- If there are no highest points – the player bears off checkers from the lowest points;
- It is not necessary to bear off checkers at every move. It is possible only to move checkers inside the home board.
Game on stakes, gammon («mars»)
A certain stake for the won point is agreed when playing in «Hachapury».
If a player doesn’t have time to bear off any of his checkers before his opponent has already born off all of them then such a situation is called «gammon» and the stake is multiplied by two.
Backgammon doesn't exist in «Hachapury».
